Fast food, a dog, and wine might seem like an odd combination, but that is exactly what you will find at Three Dudes Winery in San Marcos, Texas.
Three Dudes Winery is run by Terry Alford, Jeff Felderhoff and Ron Pontiff and was opened in 2005. A year later, they expanded by adding a tasting room.
“Honestly we all have a different story of how the winery got started,” Alford said. “One thing we agree on, is it the idea came up over a game of dominos.”
Felderhoff and Pontiff had already been making wine together at their houses, so it would not be much different. Although they discussed it over the game, they had no plan to act upon it.
“One day there was a welder who had eight extra metal siding panels who didn’t need them,” Alford said. “He asked us if we would be able to use them and that was the official start to our winery.”
The three men built the winery with their own hands and used only those eight panels to construct it. Since then, they have expanded the winery to include restrooms and a back room to house the equipment.
“We never really had a plan from the beginning,” Alford said. “We just decided to make wine that we like and if other people don’t like it, then there’s more for us.”
The winery currently makes seven different wines from Texas grown grapes and produces about 1,000 cases of wine a year.
“We drink what we can and then sell the rest,” Alford said.
The winery includes a riverside terrace, a back patio, an outside lounge area, and the tasting room.
“The environment here is not very serious,” Alford said. “People can come to the winery dressed in casual clothing and fit in just fine.”
The winery is located at 125 Old Martindale Road and is open seven days a week from noon to 6 p.m. People are welcome to stop by for a casual wine tasting and enjoy the friendly environment the staff creates.
The winery also hosts weddings, bridal parties, birthday parties, and other events. To make reservations for an event, call the winery at 512-392-5634.
